Frankfurt in central Germany is a port on the Main River. It is known in English as Frankfurt. The city is an industrial, media, commercial, and financial center and a transportation hub. It is headquarters of the leading German stock exchange, numerous commercial banks, and the Bundesbank, Germany's central bank - and the European Central Bank also is there. Among English speakers it is usually known as simply Frankfurt, but Germans call it by its full name so as to distinguish it from another Frankfurt in Germany, Frankfurt an der Oder.

It was once called Frankfurt-on-Main in English. The three pillars of Frankfurt's economy are finance, trade fairs, and transport; it is the transportation hub of Germany.

Frankfurt has been Germany's financial capital for centuries. The Frankfurt Stock Exchange is Germany's largest, the site of 85% of Germany's turnover in stocks. Frankfurt is also the German capital that never was. The city has been at the political center of Germany for centuries.

The inabitants of Germany are ethnic Germans. There are, however, more than 7 million foreign residents, including asylees, guest workers, and their dependents. Germany is a prime destination for political and economic refugees from many developing countries. An ethnic Danish minority lives in the north, and a small Slavic minority known as the Sorbs lives in eastern Germany.

Germany has one of the world's highest levels of education, technological development, and economic productivity. Since the end of World War II, the number of youths entering universities has more than tripled, and the trade and technical schools of the Federal Republic of Germany.
